Lionfish Hunting in Sandals Curacao

Updated: May 6

The Gorgeous Villain: How I Became a Certified Invasive Lionfish Tracker in Curacao

When most people think of a luxury dive vacation, they imagine drifting peacefully over coral reefs, spotting a sea turtle, and heading back to shore for a sunset cocktail. But in October 2025, while staying at Sandals Royal Curaçao, I decided to add a little something to my itinerary.

I didn’t just go diving.

I became a certified invasive lionfish tracker.

Beauty with a Dark Side

If you’ve ever seen a lionfish underwater, you know they are stunning. Their bold stripes, flowing fins, and dramatic spines make them look like royalty of the reef. But don’t let the beauty fool you. They are one of the most destructive invasive species in the Caribbean.

Originally from the Indo-Pacific, lionfish have no natural predators in Atlantic and Caribbean waters. They reproduce rapidly, consume juvenile reef fish, and disrupt delicate marine ecosystems. In some areas, they’ve caused major declines in native fish populations.

As a travel advisor who believes the best vacations should also respect the places we visit, I knew this was something I wanted to experience firsthand.

Training Day in Paradise

The certification course through the Sandals dive team was equal parts fascinating, challenging, and empowering. Lionfish removal is not simply about catching fish. It requires precision, safety, and environmental awareness.

We trained with three essential tools and techniques:

The ZooKeeper

This specialized containment device safely stores lionfish after capture. Since lionfish have venomous spines, proper handling is critical. The ZooKeeper allows divers to remove fish responsibly while protecting themselves and others.

The Pole Spear

Unlike traditional fishing gear, lionfish hunting uses a pole spear, which requires patience and accuracy. It’s about moving slowly, staying calm, and lining up the perfect shot.

Buoyancy Control

This may have been the most important skill of all.

To remove lionfish safely, divers must hover steadily in place without damaging coral or stirring up the reef. It’s conservation with discipline, protecting the ecosystem while helping restore balance to it.

The Hunt Begins

Boarding the dive boats at Sandals Royal Curaçao is always a treat, but this trip had a different energy. We weren’t just going sightseeing.

We were going with purpose.

Once underwater in Curaçao’s crystal-clear sea, our guide led us toward areas where lionfish are commonly found. Spotting one tucked into the reef brought a rush of adrenaline. Successfully capturing it brought something even better:

A sense of contribution. I captured 8!

Instead of simply admiring marine life, we were actively helping preserve it.

From Reef to Table

One of the most interesting twists to the lionfish story is this: they’re delicious.

Once the venomous spines are carefully removed, lionfish become a flaky, mild white fish prized by many chefs throughout the Caribbean. It may be the only time “eat the problem” is both clever and environmentally responsible.

Why Lionfish Hunting in Sandals Cruacao Should Be on a Diver’s Bucket List

If you’re already scuba certified, this is one of the most rewarding specialty experiences you can add to a Caribbean vacation.

It combines:

  • Adventure

  • Skill-building

  • Marine conservation

  • A deeper connection to the destination

You return home with more than vacation photos; you come back knowing you made a difference.

Curaçao Can Be More Than a Beach Trip

Luxury travel doesn’t have to mean choosing between comfort and meaningful experiences. You can spend your mornings diving vibrant reefs, your afternoons relaxing in a private pool suite, and your evenings dining oceanside under the stars.

That balance is what made this trip unforgettable.
