The Call of the Wild: Why Alaska and Canada Belong on Your Bucket List

Updated: Mar 19

There is a specific kind of silence you only find in the North. It’s the sound of a massive glacier "calving" into the sea, the distant blow of a humpback whale, and the wind moving through ancient cedar forests.

For many of my clients, Alaska and Canada represent the ultimate "close-to-home" adventure. You get the drama of the Swiss Alps and the wildlife of an African safari, all without the jet lag of traveling overseas. If you’ve been dreaming of wide-open spaces and crisp mountain air, this is the year to finally make it happen.

The "Land and Sea" Strategy

The biggest mistake travelers make is thinking they have to choose between a cruise or a land tour. To truly see this region, you need both.

  • By Sea: We sail through the Inside Passage—a winding waterway of fjords and islands where the scenery never stops. This is your front-row seat to Glacier Bay and the charming, historic ports like Ketchikan and Skagway.

  • By Rail: I always recommend adding a "land extension." Whether it’s the glass-domed Rocky Mountaineerthrough the Canadian Rockies or the Alaska Railroad up to Denali National Park, seeing the interior by train is a pinnacle luxury experience.

When to Find Your "Sweet Spot"

Timing is everything in the North, and it depends on what you want to see:

  • May & June: This is my favorite "insider" secret. The crowds are thinner, the prices are often better, and it is peak season for baby wildlife.

  • July & August: Perfect for families. You’ll get the warmest weather and those famous "midnight sun" hours where the day seems to never end.

  • September: The season’s grand finale. The tundra turns vibrant shades of red and gold, and if you're lucky, the Northern Lights might just make an early appearance.

Experiences You Won't Forget

While every trip is custom-tailored, these are the moments my clients talk about for years:

  • The "Quiet" Moments: Sipping coffee on your private veranda as the ship glides past a wall of blue ice.

  • The Wild Encounters: Spotting a grizzly bear from the safety of a domed rail car or watching eagles soar over the fjords.

  • The History: Walking through the colorful "totem parks" and learning the deep Indigenous heritage of the Tlingit and Haida peoples.

Why Book This With Me?

Alaska and Canada are complicated. Between choosing the right cruise line (some are better for glaciers, others for food), navigating "open-jaw" flights, and securing those high-demand Denali lodges, the logistics can be overwhelming.

When you book with me, I handle the "domino effect." I ensure your transfers are seamless, your rail seats have the best views, and you have built-in protection if the weather decides to change your plans.

I hope I inspired you to consider why Alaska and Canada Belong on Your Bucket List!

Happy Travels!
